Accommodation is share twin or double with the option of single rooms at additional cost. Details below in section on accommodation.

What do the fees include?

Freedom (self-guided) Tours include:
Taieri Gorge Excursion Train (one-way).
Bike and helmet (panniers available if needed).
Accommodation.
Continental breakfasts (hotel/motel option only).
Transport for travellers and bikes to and from start and finish of rail trail.
Maps.
Emergency bike kit (e.g spare tube).

What surface does the Rail Trail have?

Unsealed two tracks - varies from fine gravel to ballast

How fit do I need to be?

You choose the pace and the distance you want.

How much cycling can I do?

Average day cycle is 40-60Km or 25-37 miles.

What accommodation will we use?

Typically this will include excellent facilities in comfortable, clean, rural hotel/motel accommodation. The focus will be on atmosphere and historic interest.

Will the bike fit me?

All bikes are mountain bikes with front suspension, and time will be taken to adjust the bike for your individual needs. Saddles have gel coating for your comfort. On New Zealand public roads and on the Rail Trail, cycle helmets are compulsory. You may wish to bring your own, though helmets are supplied at no extra cost.

What weather can I expect?

Spring: (October - December)
Coastal areas: 12 - 24o Celsius.
Central Otago: 15 - 25o Celsius. A minimum 25 sunblock is recommended.
Summer: (January - February)
Coastal areas: 15 - 25o Celsius.
Central Otago: 20 - 30o Celsius. A minimum 25 sunblock is recommended.
Autumn: (March - May)
Coastal areas: 10 - 20o Celsius.
Central Otago: 10 - 24o Celsius. A minimum 25 sunblock is recommended.

What do I need to bring?

Clothing:

  • Cycling Gear - comfortable loose clothes suitable for cycling and walking (e.g. shorts, track suit, jeans). You don't need lycra but padded bike shorts are well worth the investment.
  • Casual outdoors clothing.
  • A waterproof jacket or coat.
  • Something warm.
    Evening wear.
  • Fashionably casual is usual.

Other:

  • Camera. There will be plenty to record.
  • Sunscreen. (See note above on the weather)
  • Sunglasses.
  • Personal medication.
  • First Aid kit
  • Additional baggage not needed on your trip can be safely stored for you.

Can you cater for special diets? E.g: vegetarian / diabetic / gluten intolerent.
